long time creeper, figure I would jump in the fray. Scott Pratt here, owner/operator of voiceofthetheatre.com website and huge Altec fan obvs :-)
Jusyt saying hi & that I joined today.
BTW - I have a single 815A that anybody can have if they want it. Hate to cut it up!
I may be able to get you dimensions. These came from the US Navy in Wash DC along with a rolling console with one 1592, two 1590's + an EQ which model # escape's me. With the 1215's & 1225's the system was unbelievable on vocals.
Probably the coolest thing that came with that purchase were NIB 601-8E's......, you read that right, 8-E's
I cannot find ANY printed info on that model. The SN's are in the low 100's if I recall. Perhaps Altec made them for the US govt only?? I dunno, just know that after 30+ years dabbling with Altec gear, never seen that version.
Digging back thru my garage after a 5 year hiatus. Forgot how much stuff I have in there - LOL
Here something on the 601-8D does this look similar ? Just to the right of the 811 horn.

The magnet cover actually looks more like the back of a 416B or like the 425 pictured here: http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...ro/page_2b.jpg

The 601-8E belongs with the other Altec "ghost" model; the 288H. Neither had printed documentation that I have ever seen.
See above pics I just added
